Sensei Carlo M. Profico, Jr.

While growing up sensei Carlo played team sports like so many other children his age, however a love for the martial arts also started when he was young. He and his brother would watch the Sunday morning kung fu movies for years after which they would go out and try to mimic all of the techniques they could remember. Having no formal training he would just use his imagination to fill in the gaps. Upon the start of 3 rd grade sensei Carlo met and became friends with sensei Aka. The affection that they both shared for the martial arts has been a bond for the two of them their whole lives.

Sensei Carlo would practice with sensei Aka for many years while never actually taking any formal martial discipline. All the while he continued to play team sports. About midway through college he decided to join a formal school. Sensei Carlo has been formally training since 1996. Less than a year later sensei had his first full contact Mixed Martial Arts fight he also started teaching classes in that year. Sensei spent two and a half years on the MMA and No Holds Barred amateur circuit training six to seven days a week he also competed in numerous grappling tournaments all of this while attaining a degree in exercise physiology. His promising fight career was cut short after sustaining a serious injury to his cervical spine, and he was forced to stop his own training for two and half years. He did continue to teach while he was injured.

After getting his degree sensei started working in the field for which he studied. He also worked as a bouncer in a string of different bars in Philadelphia and NJ. In April of 2000 he acquired a position at a facility that teaches motor skill development to children ages 3 to 12 through the media of sports, karate, and gymnastics. When he received the new position he stopped teaching at his instructor’s school after spending 3 years teaching there, 2 of those years as the head instructor. While at this facility sensei worked on coordination, strength, agility, and basic skills progression. Through his work there sensei Carlo honed his ability to break down skills into manageable parts and make them easier to understand, which is at the core of teaching. He was promoted to the Assistant Director position after his first two years there and held that position for two years, the last of which was the company’s best year in its decade of existence. While there he redesigned and implemented their current karate program. All of his experiences helped him accumulate data on the developmental issues of teaching children martial arts.

In 2001 after spending ten months going through the slow process of rehabilitating himself and though not fully healed sensei was able to begin training again and participated in two grappling tournaments. Since opening the school in September of 2002 he has not competed deciding to devote most of his time into building the school. As of September of 2004 sensei will be leaving his position at the other facility so that he can focus on Budo. He has also resumed working as a bouncer to increase his knowledge base of practical street situations for the development of Budo’s Scenario Training Program. He hopes to one day have enough time available to compete again. For now though his focus is on making Budo the best possible place to learn about the martial arts in all of its facets and to spread the Budo style of teaching to as many people as possible.
